Water Supply for Rural Areas and Small Communities
In 1953, WHO surveyed Members States and responses from 71 countries revealed that there are no official standards of water quality among respondents. In response to the results of the survey and the increase in international travel, International Standards for Drinking-water were published by the World Health Organization HO in 1958. These standards were developed based on sanitation and water treatment expertise from several WHO regions and focused on water quality criteria, sampling, and approved laboratory methods. Five years later, the World Health Organization published the Water Supply for Rural Areas and Small Communities, which provided addition direction to governments and health officials on how to improve the management of water supplies in rural areas and small communities.
