Java earthquake: environmental health and sanitation require serious attention
An earthquake measuring 5.9 on Richter scale struck Yogyakarta Province on 27 May, at 5:53 am local time. At a meeting in Djakarta, 28 May, the Minister of Health gave an update, and stressed that attention should be put on environmental health and sanitation, especially for internally displaced persons (IDPs). WHO has mobilized resources to respond to emergency and long-term needs from the serious damaged water and sanitation infrastructure.
