Role of WHOPES

WHOPES resides within the Vector Ecology and Management Unit in the Department of Control of Neglected Tropical Diseases.

WHOPES will continue to manage the following functions:

  • Normative functions
    • guidelines and standard operating procedures for laboratory and field testing of pesticide products (efficacy, risk assessment) and for specifications of pesticides and application equipment,
    • normative guidance in management of pesticides for public health
    • operational guidelines in surveillance and vector control
  • Policy development in life-cycle management of pesticides for public health
  • Technical support and capacity building for vector control
    • developing GLP based quality management systems for product evaluation
    • training in entomology and vector control for programmes, including pesticide management and insecticide resistance
    • monitoring global insecticide use
  • Partnership and collaboration
    • coordinating the compliance testing of pesticide application equipment
    • facilitating the production and supply of insecticide susceptibility test kits
    • continued support for countries and stakeholders in procurement, use and management of public health pesticides
