WHO Statistical Information System (WHOSIS)

Women who have had mammography (percentage)

Definition

The percentage of women aged 50–69 years who have undergone a breast examination or mammography in the past year or past three years.

Data sources

The data are complied from the World Health Survey conducted by WHO in 66 countries in the course of 2002–2004. For OECD countries that did not participate in the survey, the relevant data were complied from OECD publications.

Methods of estimation

Numerator: the number of women aged 50–69 years reporting having received a mammography within a defined period, being the past year for the OECD data and the past three years for the World health Survey data.

Denominator: the number of women aged 50–69 years answering survey questions on mammography or eligible for an organized screening programme.

For the survey data, weighted national estimates were obtained with post-stratification corrections. The estimates are not age-standardized, however.

Disaggregation

The survey data offer opportunities for disaggregation by income quintile, educational level and rural/urban residence.
