Women who have had PAP smear (percentage)
Definition
The percentage of women aged 20–69 years who have undergone cervical cancer screening in the past year or past three years.
Data sources
The data are complied from the World Health Survey conducted by WHO in 66 countries in the course of 2002–2004. For OECD countries that did not participate in the survey, the relevant data were complied from OECD publications.
Methods of estimation
Numerator: the number of women aged 20–69 years reporting having received cervical cancer screening within a defined period, being the past year for the OECD data and past three years for the World health Survey data; OR the number of women age 20–69 years screened for cervical cancer through an organized programme.
Denominator: the number of women aged 20–69 years answering survey questions or participating in an organized screening programme.
For the survey data, weighted national estimates were obtained with post-stratification corrections. The estimates are not age-standardized, however.
Disaggregation
The survey data offer opportunities for disaggregation by income quintile, educational level and rural/urban residence.
