The Chair invites all the stakeholders to submit documentation for good practice and obstacles. These documents will be an important source informing and complementing the iERG's review and analysis.
About the iERG Chair - Richard Horton
Ms Joy Phumaphi of Botswana and Prof Richard Horton of the United Kingdom were selected as co-chairs of the iERG. As recommended by the Selection Panel for the iERG, and with the agreement of all iERG members, it was decided that Richard Horton would assumed the Chair responsibilities for the first two years, to be followed by Joy Phumaphi for the next two years.

The iERG: an innovation in accountability
As the era of the Millennium Development Goals draws to an end, it is right that countries and the global community compose a balance sheet of credit and debit. Undoubtedly, progress has been achieved in many areas. But not all spheres of global health have shown similar progress. Reductions in maternal mortality have taken place but are hampered by persistent weaknesses in struggling health systems. In recognition of the need to hold all partners accountable for their promises to make progress, the Commission on Information and Accountability for Women's and Children's Health established (in 2011) an independent Expert Review Group (iERG) to monitor progress, to review successes and obstacles to success, and to offer remedies to overcome those obstacles. The iERG published its first report in 2012.

So what does this year's Assembly mean for women and children? Dr Chan reaffirmed her commitment to women and Africa. And she again threw the weight of her position and WHO behind the Secretary-General's "Every Woman Every Child" initiative.

It was an event all of us on the iERG have been looking forward to for months - our first open consultation with stakeholders. On Thursday, May 24, in Geneva at the World Health Assembly, we got what we hoped for.

Getting ready for the iERG Consultation and other news
Please save this date. On May 24 in Geneva, the iERG will be holding a stakeholder consultation at the World Council of Churches from 2-6 pm. We have room for 200 participants, and further details will be provided shortly about pre-registration. In the meantime, please mark your calendars. We want to see you in Geneva!

First meeting of the iERG
