Dr Mitsuhiro Ushio
Board Chair, Global Health Workforce Alliance and Assistant Minister for Global Health, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan
The Global Health Workforce Alliance (The Alliance) is pleased to announce the selection of its new Board Chair, Dr Mitsuhiro Ushio, as of 25 October, 2013. Dr Ushio is presently working as the Assistant Minister for Global Health at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare in Japan. He is a medical doctor with professional engagement in global health issues. Dr Ushio has taken over from the former chair, Dr Masato Mugitani, who retired from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare at the end of May.
A graduate of Okayama University, Dr. Mitsuhiro Ushio worked as Associate Professional Officer at the WHO/Western Pacific Regional Office between 1985 and 1987. He was also Health Planning Advisor for the Hospital Guidance Division, Health Policy Bureau at the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. From 2001 to 2003, he was Director of the International Food Safety Planning, Policy Planning Division at the Department of Food Sanitation. He was later appointed as Director of the Division of Tuberculosis and Infectious Diseases Control at the Medical Service Bureau (2003-2005), and as Executive Technical Advisor to the Director General of the Human Development Department at the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) (2009-2012).
The Alliance Secretariat, on behalf of its members and partners, congratulates Dr. Ushio on his new appointment and looks to his leadership and guidance as we enter an exciting and critical phase to advance the HRH agenda into discussions on Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and the post-2015 development agenda.
