Provision of anesthesia services for emergency obstetric care through task shifting in South Asia
Peer reviewed article
This paper reviews the literature on task shifting for anesthesia to lower cadres in South Asia to increase access to emergency obstetrics care to reduce maternal mortality rate. As a result of the task shifting programmes anesthesia coverage has increased in most South Asian countries.
But most programmes have not been implemented systematically as part of an overall human resources strategy. As a result they have failed to maximize their potential to improve emergency obstetric care in underserved areas. This paper provide recommendations to maximize the benefit of these programmes.
