Who wants to work in a rural health post? The role of intrinsic motivation, rural background and faith-based institutions in Ethiopia and Rwanda

This study was conducted to explore the factors influencing health workers’ choice to work in rural areas as a basis for designing policies to address the mal distribution of health workers.
The results of the survey show that along with economic incentives, other factors such as intrinsic motivation, religious convictions or beliefs and belonging to rural background can be strong factors in decision making process to work in remote and rural areas.
