This article published in the Journal of the American Medical Association analyses through a mail-based survey the perceptions of American physicians on their role in community participation, political activities and collective advocacy.

Over 90% of respondents placed high importance on public activities and a third had personally engaged in some of them. Factors associated with a higher level of involvement in public activities are identified.
