The Global Health Workforce Alliance (the Alliance) hosted a special session at the UN ECOSOC Innovation Fair to launch the Resource Requirements Tool (RRT) on Wednesday 8 July 2009.

The Alliance Task Force on Human Resources for Health (HRH) Financing has developed the RRT, a practical costing tool that aims to assist countries to estimate and project the costs of their HRH plans; analyse the plans' affordability; stimulate "what if" scenarios; and monitor implementation.

A large number of representatives from the UN missions of the 57 crisis countries as well as representatives from the major Global Health Initiatives such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, GAVI and the IHP+ attended the launch session hosted by the Alliance. The launch raised interesting and innovative discussions among the country/mission representatives and multiple Global Health Initiatives which attended.

In addition to the launch session, the Alliance participated to the ECOSOC Innovation Fair with an exhibition booth, to which UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon paid a visit on Monday 6 July 2009. Demonstrations of the RRT were also done at the booth and provided insightful opportunities for those who were unable to attend the launch to establish first hand the various benefits of the RRT.

The launch and use of the RRT aspires to help reverse the global health workforce shortage.
