Expo SGTES - National Seminar of Labor and Education Management for Health, 19-21 July 2010, Brasilia, Brazil
As the largest gathering of health labor and health education management professionals of Brazil, EXPO SGTES 2010 will showcase the achievements of Brazilian human resources for health (HRH) policies and experiences regarding labor issues and education of health workers. Hundreds of health training programs and schools will participate, along with other HRH stakeholders, joined together to review the achievements of the past seven years as well as discuss current challenges and future and endeavors under the leadership of the Secretariat of Labor and Education Management for Health (SGTES) of the Brazilian Ministry of Health.
Established in 2003, SGTES is the leading branch of the Brazilian Ministry of Health responsible for fulfilling the constitutional premise that directs the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) to organize the national HRH policy. As a result, it has dedicated the past seven years to develop new initiatives to realign health care training and education with the needs of public health care services while managing labor conditions of health workers to ensure, among other objectives, an equitable distribution of health care professionals throughout the country.
This Secretariat has also been actively engaged in frequent dialogues with international stakeholders to highlight the importance of an adequate supply of well-trained HRH, promoting this theme in diverse forums. Consequently, it was chosen to head the HRH Working Group of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), spearheading the adoption of an extensive agenda that includes the development of a network of institutions of higher education related to the health sector.
As such, one of the main activities in the first day of the Expo SGTES 2010 will be an international meeting of medical education. The purpose of this meeting is to foster collaborations between South American countries to strengthen medical education geared towards Primary Health Care. To achieve this goal, it shall discuss a number of successful initiatives conducted under the leadership of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the Ministry of Health of Brazil, and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER).
The invitees are leaders in HRH policies and medical education in South America, as well as decision makers in key institutions that may influence policies in higher education in their countries. The meeting is designed to provide ample space to discuss possible collaborative initiatives that can fit into regional and sub regional orientations. As such, the selected group of participants will have opportunities to review progress and good practices in South American countries and a group discussion will be conducted in the afternoon, to analyze possible avenues for joint work
