Agence de Médecine Préventive, France
Member profile
Created in 1972 by Dr Charles Mérieux and Pr. Jacques Monod, AMP (Agence de Médecine Préventive, Agency of Preventive Medicine) is a non-profit NGO working in the tradition of Louis Pasteur to support the development of scientific discoveries, industrial applications and technological innovations that are greatly needed in the fight against infectious diseases. The goal of AMP is to be a link between scientific, biological, technical, human and financial resources that can be mobilized at the global level to address the needs of developing countries.
Main activities
In order to better understand the issues and the people involved, AMP works in the field. It proposes action and contributes to the development of research-to-action programs for preventive medicine that integrate economic, institutional and governmental aspects. One of the governing principles of AMP is continuity. Inspired by the Millennium Development Goals, AMP seeks to provide tailored solutions to local health problems that often mainly affect women and children. AMP has strengthened its expertise in the field of vaccinology research action (serological, epidemiological, economic and logistics studies). The studies that AMP carries out provide essential information to country-level decision makers, international organizations working in the field of immunizations and the pharmaceutical industry. AMP has also developed capacities in training program development (overall management of the creation of training programs) and instructional multimedia design (creation of multimedia distance training tools).
Links to the health workforce crisis
During its more than 35 years of field action in developing countries and particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa, AMP has witnessed first-hand the deterioration of capacities in human resources for health. Consequently, AMP proposes its support to contribute to capacity building and human resources for health in developing countries by:
- Technical capacity building for Human Resources Management within Health Ministries
- Capacities optimization in training institutions and
- Petitioning in favor of the development of human resources for health. It provides counseling for human resources management and training, as well as distance education. AMP also contributes to the distribution of public health and vaccinology information through the organization of scientific and technical seminars and conferences.
