Member profile
The great education experience that is now Babcock University (BU) has its roots in the Adventist College of West Africa (ACWA), established on September 17, 1959 with an initial intake of seven ministerial students. The University is fully owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church, and registered under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to operate as a private University and, as such, does not receive any government grants. Its mission is building people for leadership through quality Christian education to transform lives.
Main activities
The traditional emphasis of the Seventh-day Adventist philosophy of education is on the balanced and harmonious development of the whole man in his physical, social and spiritual environment. BU dispenses quality preparation for students to assume careers in the professions, in industry, in public service, in business, in the arts and in various trades. Specific goals and objectives of Babcock University are, therefore, classified as follows: Intellectual, Aesthetic Art, Physical, Social and Spiritual.
Links to the health workforce crisis
Recognizing that multiple and complex factors affect the health of the public, BU's faculty and students examine environmental issues, access to health care services, health policies, and social and contextual factors as determinants of health. BU acknowledges that efforts to improve health must go beyond the treatment of disease and must address all conditions affecting the health of populations including human behaviour, socio-economic conditions, and environmental impacts on human health. This is the thrust of Public Health incorporating, social work which is a valuable component of the Primary Health Care Scheme, operating within the community. Realizing the challenges of a new millennium and the complex nature of its society, BU is committed to providing competent professionals with a well structured, broad-based professional training that is relevant and functional, reflecting a Christian orientation.
