Flinders University Rural Clinical School
Member profile
The Flinders University Rural Clinical School (FURCS) aims to serve both Flinders University and the rural and remote communities of South Australia through high quality medical education, research and clinical service for and in rural communities. Students and staff thrive in a culture of clinical excellence, world renowned educational programs, and inspiring research that makes a difference in the way of life and the world.
Main activities
FURCS has many established leading edge researchers working in dynamic groups within the university and with external academic, government and industry partners. The major research groups are health professional education and rural and remote health. FURCS develops, promotes and supports research programs that deliver improved health outcomes to the communities (populations) served by Flinders University. These communities are the Southern Region of Adelaide, the Aboriginal communities in South Australia and the Northern Territory, and rural and remote communities in the lower Eyre Peninsula and Riverland.
Links to the health workforce crisis
FURCS is currently the largest rural and remote health group in Australia. It is recognized internationally for health services and workforce development – in particular for:
- award winning community-based medical education;
- interdisciplinary postgraduate training for remote practice;
- partnerships with Aboriginal Medical Services;
- rural and remote health services research and development; and
- designing best practice approaches to chronic disease management in a rural and remote context.
The Riverland Clinical Simulation Centre has been developed to deliver health education that maintains and updates health professionals from all disciplines. It prepares health professionals to provide the highest quality health care in real situations by enabling them to practice critical processes on life-like manikins.
