Global Health Education Consortium

Member profile

Founded in 1991, Global Health Education Consortium (GHEC) is a non-governmental agency consisting of faculty and health care educators dedicated to global education in health professions schools and residency programs. GHEC members are active in more than 70 health profession schools and training programs in the United States, Canada, Central America and the Caribbean.

Main activities

GHEC works to facilitate global health education in four areas – curriculum and training materials development, clinical training, career development, and education policy.

For example, GHEC:

  • facilitates international educational experiences and exchanges;
  • promotes faculty development and global health career tracks;
  • facilitates short term work/service/learning opportunities for students and faculty;
  • develops and advocates policies relevant to global health education
  • develops and maintains collaborative partnerships with affinity organizations.

Links to the health workforce crisis

GHEC is committed to addressing the health needs and human rights of populations around the world and to improving the ability of the global workforce to meet the needs of underserved populations. It accomplishes this mission through the promotion, development and expansion of high quality, culturally sensitive global health education for faculty, students and professionals worldwide. GHEC’s recent project resulted in five teaching modules created with the collaboration of developing countries. While these experiences have special relevance to other low income countries their achievements also point to opportunities for improved and cost-effective care in more affluent regions. As part of the project some of the English language modules will be translated for use in Latin America as well.
