Member profile

G.M.Khan Memorial Medical Centre & Maternity Home (GMKMMC) was established in 2003 in Mirpurkhas Sindh Pakistan as a not-for-profit organization of foreign medicals post-graduates  doctors. It promotes health among mothers and babies during pregnancy and childbirth by using a sound system of screening, prevention and health education at the lowest price of 0.30 $/pt. This programme has over 16,000 registered members, and it has been successfully implemented in various villages in Sindh Mirpurkhas region during 5 years. GMKMMC envisions a world where no woman suffers preventable injury or death from pregnancy or childbirth related causes, and in which all people are able to enjoy their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Main activities

WHO is supporting countries in delivering integrated, evidence-based and cost-effective care for mothers and babies during pregnancy, childbirth and the postpartum period. Investing in health systems — especially in training midwives and in making emergency obstetric care available round-the-clock — is key to reducing maternal mortality. GMKMMC works to:

  • ensure access to quality maternal and newborn health care;
  • promote health sector reform;
  • help women and girls to prevent and manage unintended pregnancy;
  • promote the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people and other underserved groups;
  • encourage reproductive health;
  • reduce the spread of HIV, especially among women and young people; and
  • provide medical and nursing education to public and primary health care.

Links to the health workforce crisis

More than half a million women die every year of complications during pregnancy or childbirth. Most of these deaths can be avoided as the necessary medical interventions exist and are well known. The key obstacle is pregnant women's lack of access to quality care before, during and after childbirth. GMKMMC health programme is providing a platform for community medicine teaching for students paramedical staff and nurses. It has conducted various workshops in relation to its mass health education drive with qualified doctors. GMKMMC is having a strong backup support of over 100 medical consultants, major laboratories, diagnostic centers and hospitals of Sindh & Pakistan.
