Medicus Mundi International Network

Member profile

Medicus Mundi International (MMI) is the Network of private not-for-profit organisations working in the field of international health cooperation and advocacy. The Network members fight global poverty by promoting access to health and health care as a fundamental human right (“Health for All”). The Network aims at enhancing the quality and effectiveness of the work of its members and their partners through sharing know-how and joining forces. The Network’s key strategy is to strengthen the health system as a whole. Strengthening the private not-for-profit health sector is an essential aspect in this.

Main activities

The MMI Network supports its members’ efforts to achieve the shared vision of Health for All through a set of specific contributions: undertaking advocacy and sensitization activities at an international level; enhancing communication and the exchange of knowledge and know-how between members; enhancing cooperation, coordination of activities and the development of joint activities; fostering the development of common policies and practices.

Links to the health workforce crisis

In the international debate around the health workforce crisis, the discussion concentrates on the role of national governments, international organisations and multi lateral funds. In general, the role of smaller private not-for-profit organisations, which play a crucial role in health provision in many countries and struggle to become a fully integrated actor within the public health system, are overlooked in the debate. There is little interest in their problems and potential solutions. Exactly these organisations are the partners of the members of the MMI Network. If their health services cannot work well because of human resources problems, proper health care is not possible, and people suffer.

The contributions of the Medicus Mundi International Network related to the health workforce crisis will be based on the experience of our members and their partners, focusing on the problems and needs of smaller private not-for-profit organisations and on a district level, where most of our partners work, and on the other hand integrate reflection of our own position of being a network of mostly European organisations.
