Moi University

Member profile

The Moi University School of Medicine (MOI) was started as the second medical school in Kenya in 1988, admitted the first intake of medical students in 1990, and then graduated the first cohort of doctors in 1997.

The mission of Moi is to contribute to knowledge and to produce graduates with practical and intellectual skills appropriate to the needs of present and future Kenyan society. Moi strives to ensure that the students acquire such skills using modalities that encourage active learning in the context in which they will later function as health professionals.

Main activities

Moi’s philosophy entails training a health professional in the context, the community, in which he/she will later practice. It encourages the student to acquire the important skills of self-directed learning, problem solving and effective communication. Moreover, Moi emphasizes not only curative, hospital-based medicine, but, also, through its community-oriented approach, prevention of diseases and promotion of good health. Research and an inquiring mind are integral parts of the training of a medical student. The School, therefore, lays emphasis on the acquisition of knowledge & skills in research, so that the graduates are able to carry out research in the health and health–related issues in modern day Kenya. Hence the overall orientation of its educational programs will be population and community based.

Links to the health workforce crisis

Moi’s vision is to excel internationally in education of health professionals, health services and research. It trains nurses at degree and masters level to fill the health workforce gaps of nurses and midwives in the local and international community. Moi’s objectives are to:

  • Practice professionalism and team work;
  • Promote innovative health professional education;
  • Practice and promote integrity in health research and care provision; and
  • Embrace openness, broad based consultation and consensus building in decision making.
