Public health foundation of Bangladesh (PHFBD) is an autonomous, non-profit voluntary organization. It is lead by a group of well reputed and committed HR experts, researchers, scientists, clinicians, teachers of medical & other health sciences, public health professionals including epidemiologists, environmentalists, sociologists, nurses and other paraprofessionals. Public health foundation is dedicated to build a healthy society by promoting an evidence-based health system working in partnership with govt. & other stakeholders through research, health education, training and improved health care services. Membership is voluntary and open from different health and allied sciences as well as from professionals related to nutrition, environments, statistics etc. The total numbers of active members are 63 (sixty three) with hundreds of volunteers.

There is an Executive Committee with a Chairman leading the committee & a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) managing the functions of Public Health Foundation of Bangladesh. The committee with its members & volunteers are determined to make a change in Bangladesh by establishing a fairer, more equitable and healthier society by addressing priority public health challenges with action oriented activities, mobilizing resources, and delivering programs. PHFBD have a vision to build a healthy society by bringing observable & measurable changes in the total health scenario of Bangladesh & create a model of other countries in the south east Asia region as a whole.

Main activities

Public health foundation of Bangladesh (PHFBD) is committed to create evidences & support evidence-based policy decisions of actions. It will work in strengthening the health care system with need based and action oriented programs. One of the most important role is to further strengthen the capacity to produce quality health human resources who will be committed, competent & well motivated. Its activities are guided by public-private partnership concept. To realize this dream PHFBD is engaged in:

  • Developing need-based HR & Health system policies, regulations, guidelines and programs
  • Building institutional capacity
  • Promoting quality education and training
  • Supporting & conducting surveys, research to create evidences
  • Mobilizing resources
  • Provide technical assistance in capacity building
  • Disseminating information by organising national, regional workshops, seminars and conferences
  • Establish effective functional partnership with all relevant stakeholders working in health human resource development & health system development.

Links to the health workforce crisis

Bangladesh is one of the countries of critical crisis in health workforce. Inadequate competency among the health workforce added the HR problem apart from other HR issues need to be addressed on a priority basis.

Public Health Foundation is working in partnership to build a health workforce which is committed & competent. It will work in partnership with Govt. for strategic direction & strategic policy and planning in health human resource development. It will involve itself with HR researches as well as actively involved in implementation, monitoring & evaluation of strategic HR planning.
