Rhodes University is a 104-year old institution with a well-established reputation for academic excellence. Located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, Rhodes is a small university which enjoys the distinction of having among the best graduation rates in South Africa, outstanding postgraduate success rates, and the best research output per academic staff member. This is testimony to the quality of students that Rhodes attracts and to the commitment of Rhodes staff to student development and success. Of its 6 000 students, 24% are postgraduates and 25% are international students from 57 countries globally, making Rhodes a dynamic and cosmopolitan knowledge institution. The Rhodes University Faculty of Pharmacy (RUPF) is dedicated to achieving excellence in an environment of interdisciplinary co-operation, and mutual respect, consistent with the mission of the University and with the mission of the profession of Pharmacy.

Main activities

The mission of the Faculty is to promote pharmaceutical care through education, research, scholarship, creative endeavor and service. The following degrees are awarded at RUPF: Bachelor of Pharmacy BPharm; Master of Science MSc(Pharm); Master of Pharmacy MPharm; Doctor of Pharmacy PharmD; Doctor of Philosophy PhD; and Doctor of Science DSC. RI endeavors to prepare its students for entry into the practice of pharmacy as informed, caring and ethical citizens and professionals.

The priorities of RUPF are to:

  • Prepare pharmaceutical scholars and researchers through professional, undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral programs of distinction;
  • Conduct postgraduate education to advance the knowledge, expertise and competence of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists;
  • Analyze and apply knowledge about pharmaceutical products and services, and their use in society through basic and applied research and to advance, communicate and preserve that knowledge; and
  • Promote, facilitate and conduct educational programs to extend the knowledge of drugs and the rational and cost-effective use of medicines.
