Health Policy Research Center (HPRC) - Shiraz University of Medical Sciences
The Health Policy Research Center (HPRC) is an academic center founded in October 2009 in Shiraz, Iran, in affiliation with Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, with Professor Kamran Bagheri Lankarani, previous minister of health of the Islamic Republic of Iran, as chairman. At this center we expect to benefit from the experiences of capable faculty members and experts in health-related issues for effective policymaking in health systems. In this regard, the HPRC uses its excellent resources to hold seminars, congresses and workshops, and to support research projects that will yield results able to inform health-related policies or of relevance to regional, national and international health sectors.
The HPRC has a special focus on health issues such as HIV/AIDS, TB and cancer. Other priority areas within the scope of the center’s activities are health stewardship-related subjects such as health economics, health equity, access, effectiveness, efficiency and coverage.
Links to the health workforce crisis
Shiraz University of Medical Sciences asked the HPRC to enhance training for health managers in different domains. Therefore our center conducted a series of needs-assessment studies in Fars province (the fourth largest province in Iran by population). Hot topics were identified based on a survey of managers’ opinions. During 6 months we scheduled six workshops for about 200 health system managers on topics such as health system budgeting, organizational behaviour in the health system, financial management in the health system, and analysis of the national health system.
The HPRC held a training course on primary health care in February 2011 for healthcare workers from Jackson State University (Jackson, Mississippi). A formal agreement was signed between Jackson State University and our center to continue our collaboration and assist in the management of health system reform there.
