VMC's twin-towered building with over 600 beds is supported by the most up-to-date systems and technology. The hospital is supported by respected, research-based medical and nursing schools, and delivers both routine inpatient care and highly specialized medical treatment and surgical procedures. The hospital is home to the region's only Level I Trauma Center as well as the region's only Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The School awarded its first degrees in 1875. Now, with approximately 100 new students a year, the School is one of the leading centers of medical education in the United States. The School of Nursing became part of VMC in 1984.
