Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada
Member profile
Victorian Order of Nurses for Canada (VON) is dedicated to being a leader in the delivery of innovative comprehensive health and social services and to influencing the development of health and social policy in Canada. We are a national health organization and registered charity offering a wide range of community health care solutions that meet the needs of Canadians from coast to coast. For over 100 years, VON has pioneered health services in Canada. It has a proud tradition of often being the first to identify emerging health and social needs, and then providing innovative services that meet those needs. Today's VON delivers its more than 75 different programs and services through 52 local sites staffed by 4,500 health care workers, and by a dedicated army of 9016 community volunteers. VON, a national registered charity, addresses the health needs of people in Canada through services provided by nurses, other health professionals, support service workers and volunteers.
Main activities
VON's non-profit role will continue to provide governments with services that fulfill universal public health care programs, while the development of related service ventures will provide new revenues to supplement existing funding for VON's charitable services. Each site is jointly operated by volunteer boards of local citizens and professional staff who together ensure that the exact mix of VON services they deliver is based on the unique and specific needs of the community served. Through these local, provincial and national organizations, VON Canada is also working to influence the nation's fast-changing health and social policies on behalf of all Canadians. VON is dedicated to being a leader in the delivery of innovative comprehensive health and social services and to influencing the development of health and social policy in Canada. VON is committed to continuous quality improvement and is accredited by the Canadian Council of Health Services Accreditation. VON joins forces with similar organizations, families, communities, governments and other interested parties to advocate policies that ensure health care is available and accessible to everyone
Links to the health workforce crisis
VON, a charity, guided by the principles of primary healthcare, works in partnership with Canadians for a healthier society through:
- leadership in community-based care;
- delivery of innovative, comprehensive health and social services; and
- influence in the development of health and social policy.
VON Canada is interested in learning what the impact of the work environment is on the recruitment and retention of nurses providing home and community care. There is also limited documentation on the role and contribution volunteers make to the health care team in the home and community care setting. This project will identify barriers in the home and community health care settings and develop strategies and promote practices that will lead to healthy work environments - this will lead to better outcomes for clients, health workers, and organizations. VON Workplace Wellness programs are designed to take the pulse of businesses, meet wellness needs, and increase productivity. VON has fully trained Wellness Professionals, located in 52 sites across Canada. In partnership with its clients, VON designs programs that are cost-effective, promote positive change and improve employee morale, satisfaction and productivity.
