Celebrating World Health Day

Date: 7th April 2003-12.30p.m-4.30p.m.

Location: Beethoven Centre, Beethoven Street, London W10

Summary: We are having an open day celebration. Our aim is to involve local community groups and statutory organisations in all the evnts of the day. The theme for our event is "Making Health Fun in a Healthy Environment." We will emphasise to families the message that healthy eating when young is an investment in the future and eating a healthier diet as we grow older gives added value to the quality of lives we all aspire to enjoy. There could be no better way of helping to shape our future in a healthy environment. We intend to focus on children and the benefits to both parents and all who come along will be wide-ranging. There will be presentations including a series of stimulating and educational programmes, stalls and displays of leaflets, community dances, music and school trips to the event all culminating in increasing the awareness for the need of a intersectoral team effort in contributing to making a differnce.

House of Commons Seminar to Promote Awareness of World Health Day

Date: 3 April 2.30-5.30pm

Location: House of Commons

Summary: Over 65 participants (health specialists, academics, diplomats and parliamentarians) registered for the House of Commons Public Seminar to promote awareness of World Health Day (7 April 2003) chaired by Martin Smith MP and organised by Prof Terry Duffy. The event opened with the reading of the UN Secretary-General's WHD Message by the UN Representative Mr Ahmad Fawzi, followed by further supporting messages from the UN Rapporteur on the Right to Health, the European Commissioner for Human Rights and the WHO.

The remarkable success of the meeting in the House of Commons was emphasised in the feed-back from delegates and the press, which particularly noted the importance of this event in view of the significance of Westminster as an internationally respected centre of power. From the diverse range of specialists (UN staff, Red Cross officials, medical practitioners, diplomats and NGO workers) it was apparent from this meeting that a new sense of international co-operation was urgently needed. The papers ranged across such issues as public health, child labour, HIV/AIDS, World Bank programmes and across case-studies of Red Cross emergency preparedness, health issues with respect to Africa, Taiwan, the Palestinian Authority, Taiwan and Peru. From Africa to the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region- health problems know no boundaries- and it was obvious from this meeting that the case for joint effort via the WHO and other international mechanisms was well made. It was felt that the meeting was a remarkable success in focusing attention on the importance of WHD.
