In his hometown of San José, Dr Atienza noticed that the overwhelming majority of the people had no idea about the basics of water hygiene when the town suffered an outbreak of typhoid fever. As the only pediatrician, he teamed up with other doctors to found the Child Community Health Workers Foundation so that children, parents and teachers could be made aware of the source of the disease. The Foundation got a lot of support and San José’s children now correct their elders’ misconceptions about health care and typhoid fever has become a thing of the past thanks to chlorinated water.
