The Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO) celebrated World Blood Donor Day with a number of events on and around 14 June. On the day itself, a blood collection team visited government offices so that the President and cabinet members could donate their blood. The President, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Health commemorated the day with special messages.

Greetings cards were sent to donors, and the general public were kept informed by means of posters, placards, pamphlets and video clips, as well as a news conference. Popular television programmes broadcast the main slogan on the day, and that slogan also appeared on IBTO’s letter heading for the week.

As an acknowledgement of their generosity, blood recipients dedicated red roses to blood donors. Messages of appreciation to donors came also from artistes, members of the national football team of Iran and its head coach in Germany.

World Blood Donor Day is now included in the official calendar of events for Iran.
