JORDAN

The slogan for World Blood Donor Day 2006 in Jordan was “Strengthen your loyalty. Please continue donating your blood”. This was in line with the aim to retain regular voluntary blood donors, in order to maintain a safe and adequate supply of blood.

Under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Muna Al-Hussain, a ceremony was held to honour regular blood donors. The National Blood Bank, the Ministry of Health, the Civil Blood Donor Association and the World Health Organization (WHO) all supported the event. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Health, deputy WHO representative, Members of Parliament and other government officials and invited dignitaries.

Regular donors were presented with certificates of appreciation and a souvenir of the occasion. The heads of organizations and universities where blood drives are held regularly were also presented with commemorative shields. Her Royal Highness Princess Muna also received a shield to commemorate the day.

Drawings and paintings by schoolchildren were displayed, and the children of Al-Etihad schools provided some live sung entertainment.

The ceremony was well documented with pictures and a CD. Posters of His Majesty King Abdullah II donating blood were distributed. A television programme was made about the occasion, which contained interviews with regular blood donors, male and female, and a Member of Parliament, as well as the Director of the National Blood Bank.

All over Jordan, at blood banks and in major cities, various events commemorated the day. Media coverage was very good, with all newspapers reporting on the aim to achieve 100% voluntary blood donation in the country.
