World Blood Donor Day was celebrated throughout the Philippines through the combined efforts of the Department of Health, Philippine Blood Coordinating Council, the Philippine National Red Cross and the Blood Donors Network Philippines.

On 14 June, an opening ceremony took place at Robinson’s Place, Ermita, Manila, attended by dignitaries from the organizers and by representatives from the Blood Galloners Club, Philippine Information Agency, the Haemophilia Association, blood donors and guests. SEA Games Equestrian Champion, Tony Leviste, was the celebrity presenter for World Blood Donor Day 2006.

At the same time, the Blood Donors Network Philippines organized private sector blood donation camps throughout Manila. Thank you cards and acknowledgement flyers were distributed at camps, and posters were displayed in public offices and private institutions in recognition of voluntary blood donors in the country. Media publicity followed with television and radio spots and newspaper articles.

Earlier in the year, staff from the blood service began sending pictures of their donors, showing their occupation or profession. These photographs formed a “Wall of Humanity” which was displayed at public places to promote the theme of World Blood Donor Day, “I’m a teacher/librarian/farmer and I save lives”. During the opening ceremony this wall of humanity was used as a backdrop.

A bazaar with different souvenir items, lasting for one week from 14 June, took place at the Department of Health compound. Similar events were held all over the country, organized by the DOH Regional Offices and Philippine National Red Cross Regional Blood Centres and chapters.
