At a press conference in advance of World Blood Donor Day celebrations, the Minister for Health and Community Welfare spoke of the need for more blood donated on a voluntary basis. He emphasized the requirement to phase out the system of family replacement blood donation in favour of 100% voluntary non-remunerated blood donation. Tanzania currently faces serious blood shortages. The need is for 600 000 units per annum, of which Tanzania supplies only 150 000. Of these donations, only 20% are voluntary.
World Blood Donor Day itself celebrated those who save lives by coming forward to donate their blood on a voluntary non-remunerated basis.
