The Partners for Parasite Control

The Partners for Parasite Control (PPC) was launched after the World Health Assembly in 2001. It is composed of agencies of the United Nations, WHO Members States, research institutes and a multitude of NGOs. WHO acts as the Secretariat for the group and also as the lead technical agency.

The Resolution

At the World Health Assembly in 2001 a resolution was put forward which urged endemic countries to start seriously tackling worms, specifically schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths. Resolution 54.19 was endorsed by every single Member State which triggered two important spin-offs. First a measurable global goal was set and second the Partners for Parasite Control (PPC) was established.

The Global Target

The Global Target, against which each country's progress will be measured is that at least 75% of all school aged children who are at risk of morbidity from schistosomiasis and STH should be regularly reached and treated by the year 2010.

In order to reach that goal, another 'sub-goal' was set which states that all health services in endemic areas should be stocked with the drugs to treat schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths.

To regularly treat at least 75% of all school-aged children at risk of illness from schistosomiasis and soil transmitted helminths by 2010.

The Partners for Parasite Control

Resolution 54.19 also called for the establishment of a partnership bringing all the different players together. The 'Partners for Parasite Control' (PPC) was subsequently launched.

Who are the PPC partners?
PPC is composed of various UN agencies, research institutes, universities and a multitude of NGOs. Each one brings unique and different skills to the table: Some excel at providing training, others are better positioned to fundraise or create advocacy materials. Drug provision falls under the remit of some agencies and outreach is one of the most valuable resources of the NGOs.

What are the objectives of the PPC ?
As a forum for discussion with no formal membership, the PPC is different to many global health alliances which have more complicated structures. The PPC is open to all interested parties that are or wish to engage in parasite control. This means it can respond to country demands rapidly and also enjoys the flexibility of being a relatively small-scale global programme.

What you can expect from the PPC

PPC's Roles are to:

  • Provide a platform to share the latest technical and scientific information as well as practical programmatic information on control programmes.
  • To use the different capacity and skills of each partner to piggy-back de-worming onto existing programmes and campaigns.
  • To provide tools (field, lab and health education materials) and training where necessary.
  • To track the progress each endemic country is making towards the 2010 Goal.
  • To generate concerted actions from the local level up to the national level and globally.
  • To step up international advocacy for parasite control.

PPC Meetings

The PPC has held three meetings to date. The second was held in Rome (2002) and the third was held in Geneva (2004). The meeting notes are attached below.
