Based on the WHO Bench Aids for the Diagnosis of Intestinal Parasites
Three tools were originally developed to assist in the training of laboratory technicians and health workers to identify medically relevant helminth eggs and larvae, and protozoal trophozoites and cysts. They were a Training Manual, a Slide Set and The WHO Bench Aids.
A CD has now been produced which contains both the Training Manual and the Slide Set in an electronic format so that the trainer can prepare an individually tailored training course.
:: The CD-Rom
The CD contains both the Training Manual and the Slide Set enabling the trainer to prepare an individually tailored training course.
:: The Training Manual
The manual is designed as a guide for running a workshop on the diagnosis of intestinal parasites and is intended for use in conjunction with the Bench Aids. Outlines of various subjects which can be covered and a list of the required equipment and laboratory supplies are provided. Most pathogenic intestinal parasites are included, although it is highly recommended that the tutor concentrates his/her training only on the locally relevant parasites.

:: The WHO Bench Aids
The Bench Aids (produced by WHO in 1994) was developed to help laboratory technicians and other health staff to diagnose intestinal parasitic infections from faecal samples. As the name implies, it is for use as the technician sits at his/her bench, examining the samples through a microscope. It consists of a set of nine laminated photographic plates showing the most common human intestinal parasites which the technician can quickly refer to check the correct identity of the different eggs. A description of different laboratory procedures, for example the Kato-Katz technique, is also provided.
