Taenia solium: Status of endemicity of Taenia solium
Short name:
Taenia solium: Status of endemicity of Taenia solium
Data type:
Categorical
Indicator Id:
5308
Topic:
Risk factors
Morbidity
Rationale:
In the absence of surveillance and notification of T. solium full transmission cycle occurring in a country, the best proxy is the presence of known risk factors. This indicator shows full transmission of the parasite's life cycle, based on these risk factors, particularly the presence of porcine cysticercosis.
Definition:
The presence (or likely) presence of T solium full life cycle. Categories: Endemic: full parasite life cycle present; Suspected endemic; Few pigs with risk factors; Possible transmission in some communities; Non-endemic; No Data.
Disaggregation:
National
Method of measurement
Recent presence of porcine cysticercosis. If not available, the following risk factors have been taken into account: number of pigs in the country, backyard pig production, factors propitious to pig production such as geography and religion, Inequality adjusted Human Development Index, and % population with access to sanitation.
Method of estimation:
--
Preferred data sources:
Surveillance systems; All references to Kosovo should be understood to be in the context of the United Nations Security Council resolution 1244 (1999)
Taenia solium / Cysticercosis is a disease associated with poverty and lacking access to clinical and laboratory diagnosis. Many cases remain undetected and unreported. In most countries, both human taeniasis and pig cysticercosis are not notifiable. This contributes to the lack of identifying, diagnosing and reporting Taenia solium / Cysticercosis. Risk factor based models and estimations from local experts and health workers are often the only source to characterize the presence and transmission of the parasite. This indicator therefore shows the presence of the parasite rather than the full extent of infection and disease.
