Communications training
for health
WHO recognizes that effective, integrated and coordinated communication is integral to carrying out our mission of promoting health, keeping the world safe and serving the vulnerable.
Public health experts must provide information, advice, and guidance to decision-makers to prompt action that will protect the health of individuals, families, communities and nations.
The Department of Communications at the World Health Organization offers communication trainings to empower Ministries of Health, UN and partner agencies and WHO staff to tell powerful, compelling stories about their work in public health.
WHO communication trainings are a mix of e-learning, face-to-face trainings, simulation exercises, and table top exercises. Trainers use adult learning techniques to deliver interactive sessions which offer participants a safe space to practice and receive feedback from peers and facilitators.
The following trainings are offered to Ministries of Health, UN and partner agencies, WHO communications officers and consultants:
The Emergency Communications Network Training (ECN)
The Emergency Communications Network (ECN) training is WHO’s flagship emergency communication training designed to build a cohort of trained, tested and trusted communication officers in WHO, Ministries of Health and partners.

Participants from ministries of health in Africa practice media skills with WHO and partners in a simulation exercise
Effective storytelling
At WHO, we recognize the power of storytelling. This training enables participants to deliver their messages through impactful, moving stories. Participants learn and practice communication tips for effectively communicating health risks and advice on a range of health issues: from chronic health issues to new and emerging risks and diseases.
