After completing her medical studies in Geneva, Alexandra Calmy specialized in internal medicine and infectious diseases. She furthered her expertise with a PhD in clinical research on HIV/AIDS, earned in Sydney, Australia, in 2009. Her primary research interests lie in therapeutic strategies for HIV, with recent expansions into antiviral treatments for COVID-19 and MPOX.
As Head of the HIV/AIDS Unit at HUG, she plays an active role on the scientific advisory board of the Swiss HIV Cohort Study (SHCS). She also directs the Clinical Research Center at HUG and UNIGE’s Faculty of Medicine. Internationally, she co-chairs the European AIDS Clinical Society (EACS) guidelines for antiretroviral treatments, leads the research protocol evaluation team at the French National Agency for Research on AIDS, Hepatitis, and Emerging Viruses (ANRS-MIE), and has co-chaired WHO guidelines on HIV management in 2025
From 2020 to 2022, she was a member of Switzerland’s Federal Task Force on COVID-19 and in 2025 she served on a Federal commission developing measures to improve the supply of medicinal products for human use in Switzerland.
Appointed Full Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Geneva in April 2021, she holds the position of Vice-Dean for Clinical Research since 2023.
