Biography
Dr Amal Al Maani is a Senior Consultant in Paediatric Infectious Diseases and is the Director of the central Department of Infection Prevention & Control at Ministry of Health, Sultanate of Oman.
She completed her medical degree from Sultan Qaboos University, Oman. She had a diploma in tropical medicine and hygiene from London School of TM&H. She had her postgraduate training in paediatrics, infectious diseases and infection control at University of Toronto and the hospital of sick children. She achieved her fellowship in paediatric infectious diseases from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Canada in September 2010. She has the CIC (certificate in infection control) from the Certification Board of Infection Control & Epidemiology, certificate in global health from Dalla Lana School of Public Health the Centre for international Health in university of Toronto (UFT), and the Patient Safety & Quality Improvement certificate from the centre for patient safety in UFT.
She has participated at many national and International Conferences and presented many papers. She received Dr Susan King Award at Canadian AMMI conference 2011. She is the winner of the SASAKAWA global health price for 2021 for her work in the field of infection control and antimicrobial resistance. She published many papers in the field of infectious diseases and infection control with focus on Antimicrobial resistance and emerging resistant pathogens and recently COVID-19 . She had been a co-author in multiple positional statements for the ISID group in infection control including most recently about the Global Antimicrobial Stewardship with a Focus on Low- and Middle- Income Countries and on the Prevention of Clostridioides difficile in hospitals. She is a reviewer for many scientific journals in the field of infectious diseases and infection prevention and control including IJID, JIPH, and a review editor for the Frontiers in Public Health.
Dr Al-Maani is an affiliated trainer for residency programs in OMSB (Oman Medical Speciality Board), a member of clinical microbiology educational committee, the coordinator for public health rotation , and head of the research subcommittee. She introduced the IPC training as enrolment requirement for OMSB residents, participated in development of online IPC course for OMSB and was an external faculty for the online diagnostic course in AMR for the LSTMH. She is the focal point for the Global AMR Surveillance System (GLASS) and the coordinator for Oman national surveillance system for AMR (OMASS). She is a member in the national technical advisory team for COVID- 19 pandemic. She is a member in the NITAG (National Immunization Technical Advisory Group), GCC infection control and AMR committee, and the Infection Prevention and Control - Global Community of Practice. Recently she became a member in the GLG- AMR (Global Leaders Group for AMR) advisory and technical team.
