Atanu Basu
Biography
Dr Atanu Basu is a senior virologist at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), within the National Institute of Virology in Pune, India. He heads the Electron Microscopy & Pathology Group at the Institute and his research interests are in the domain areas of virus discovery and pathogenesis, biosecurity and biosafety aspects of high-consequence pathogens, global health security and research into novel therapeutics using emerging technologies. Dr Basu has extensive experience in United Nations Disarmament Conventions specifically in the Biological and Toxins Weapons Convention (BTWC) and has particular interests in biorisk management, biological arms control and review of advances in science and technology for biothreat mitigation.
Dr Basu’s academic training is in physiology and molecular biology with a doctorate in chemistry. Besides research he is a passionate teacher having held previous position as a visiting Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Mandi where he enjoys guiding postgraduate and doctoral students in areas of biotechnology, chemistry, pathology, life and health sciences, public health and international affairs.
