Carlos A Monteiro
Biography
Carlos A Monteiro, MD, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Nutrition and Public Health at the University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. He founded and coordinated the USP Centre for Epidemiological Studies in Health and Nutrition (CESHN) from 1990 to 2023.
His expertise is in nutritional epidemiology, particularly the links between dietary patterns and noncommunicable diseases. At CESHN, he developed the Nova food classification system and the concept of ultra-processed foods, now applied worldwide in hundreds of studies. Since 2020, he has coordinated the NutriNet Brasil cohort, following over 100,000 participants to investigate diet and noncommunicable disease incidence.
Over the past 35 years, Dr. Monteiro has served WHO, PAHO, UNICEF, FAO, and other organizations, including membership in WHO’s Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group on Diet and Health (2010–2023). He has authored more than 300 publications with over 30,000 citations (Web of Science), ranking among the top 1% most cited researchers in his field (2019–2024).
His honours include the PAHO Abraham Horwitz Award for Excellence in Leadership in Inter-American Health and the World Obesity Federation William Philip T. James Award. He is a Fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
