Dr Christina Hutson
Biography
Dr Christina (Christy) Hutson, PhD, MS joined CDC’s Poxvirus program during the first U.S. monkeypox virus (MPXV) outbreak in 2003, following the completion of her master’s degree. She then went on to study animal models of MPXV infection and completed her PhD in Veterinary Pathology from the University of Georgia.
Since completion of her PhD in 2015, Dr. Hutson has led the fundamental studies with live variola virus (i.e. smallpox) for CDC’s Poxvirus and Rabies Branch.
In May 2022, Dr. Hutson became Chief of the Poxvirus and Rabies Branch. The branch is configured into 7 teams with over 30 staff members focused on multiple areas include laboratory, epidemiology, and clinical. Most recently Dr. Hutson served as the Senior Science Advisor to the CDC clade I MPXV response.
