Biography

Dr VALIA Daniel is an epidemiologist working in the field of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). He currently serves as a study coordinator at the Clinical Research Unit of Nanoro (CRUN) in Burkina Faso.

A citizen of Burkina Faso, Dr VALIA Daniel earned his medical degree from the University of Ouagadougou. He further pursued a Master’s degree in Public Health – Disease Control at the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. Currently, he is completing a PhD in Medical Sciences between the Université Catholique de Louvain in Brussels, the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, and his home institute, the CRUN.

His research focuses on understanding the key drivers of AMR in rural Burkina Faso. After identifying a high prevalence of extendedspectrum beta-lactamase - producing Enterobacterales faecal colonisation in the community, he explored the factors that may be sustaining this phenomenon. His investigations include community members’ knowledge on antibiotics, motivations behind healthcare provider choices when seeking care, patterns of antibiotic use across different healthcare providers, and water, sanitation, and hygiene practices that may contribute to the transmission of resistance genes.

Dr VALIA Daniel’s work has informed context-specific strategies for AMR containment, contributing valuable insights to global efforts in combating AMR.
