Dr Albert Koulman

Head, NIHR BRC Core Metabolomics and Lipidomics Laboratory, NIHR BRC Nutritional Biomarker Laboratory, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom

Biography

Albert Koulman leads the Nutritional Biomarker Laboratory (NBL) at the University of Cambridge, UK. NBL focuses on the development and application of methods for nutritional biomarker analysis. Within the NBL researchers use state-of-the-art analytical technology to develop new methods to measure nutritional biomarkers, as well as maintaining gold-standard methods to measure specific nutritional biomarkers. The NBL is responsible for the analytical work of the UK’s National Diet and Nutrition Survey.

Dr Koulman’s work has a strong emphasis on fatty acids, lipids and fat. He has been responsible for, and contributed to, a large number of international peer reviewed publications on the role of fatty acids in health and disease. He developed the analytical pipeline of the largest studies on the epidemiology of fatty acids, where his laboratory has measured plasma fatty acids in over 50,000 individuals. He therefore has an in-depth knowledge on the measurement of fatty acids and lipids, as well as their role in health, disease, growth and development.

He is strong advocate of the use of evidence-based practices and the use of objective measurements in public health and policy making. He wants to contribute his technical and scientific experience to the TFATAG.
