Biography
Dr Flavio Ferraz P Alcantara is a distinguished Brazilian clinical pathologist who has held a part-time position for two decades at the Central Lab Division (DLC) of the HC - Clinical Hospital, University of Sao Paulo Medical School—the largest publicly funded hospital in Latin America. DLC is a CAP-accredited laboratory operated by the Clinical Pathology Department of the university.
Following his residency, Dr Alcantara dedicated ten years to research, spending six years at The Scripps Research Institute specializing in molecular biology, virology, and autoimmunity, and four years pursuing doctoral studies at the Immunology Department of the University of São Paulo. He subsequently returned to DLC, where his responsibilities include molecular biology assay development, quality control, accreditation processes, laboratory-developed test (LDT) validation, resident education in pathology, and ctDNA/NGS research related to liver cancer.
In addition, Dr Alcantara holds part-time roles with a private clinical laboratory, overseeing bone marrow collection and analysis, providing technical supervision, and managing laboratory operations.
Dr Alcantara has served as a delegate, chairperson, and consulting member for the IFCC Kidney Diseases Task Force/Committee and was recently appointed Latin America director (2024-26) for WASPaLM (World Association of Societies of Pathology Laboratory Medicine), representing the Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology.
