Dr Leontine Alkema

Biography

Dr Leontine Alkema is an Assistant Professor of Biostatistics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Previously, Dr Alkema held positions as an Assistant Professor at the National University Singapore and a Postdoctoral Fellow at Columbia University.

Dr Alkema’s research focus includes the development of statistical models to assess and interpret demographic and population-level health trends and differentials as well as the development of estimation and projection methods for key global indicators, including child and maternal mortality rates, the total fertility rate, and the unmet need for contraceptive methods. She is the Lead Technical Advisor for the UN Maternal Mortality Estimation Inter-Agency Group (UN MMEIG) and a Member of the Technical Advisory Group of the UN Inter-Agency Group on Child Mortality Estimation (UN ICME). 

Dr Alkema earned a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Statistics from the University of Washington in 2008.
