Dr Nicola Low

Nicola Low is an infectious disease epidemiologist and public health physician, and Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Bern, Switzerland, where she leads the Sexual and Reproductive Health Research Group and chairs the Epidemiology Cluster of the Multidisciplinary Center for Infectious Diseases.

Her research focuses on the epidemiology, prevention, and control of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), particularly curable STIs. Key areas of expertise include STI screening and diagnosis, antimicrobial resistance in Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Mycoplasma genitalium, estimation of the global burden of STIs, and emerging infectious diseases.

She leads and collaborates on research studies in Switzerland, Papua New Guinea, and southern Africa, using epidemiological, clinical trial, systematic review, and modelling approaches to inform public health policy and practice.

She has contributed to several WHO advisory and guideline groups and served as Vice-Chair of the WHO Emergency Committee for the global mpox outbreak in 2022-2023. She also holds editorial roles with Sexually Transmitted Infections and PLOS Medicine.
