Dr Duncan McPherson

Biography

Dr Duncan McPherson, MB BS FRCA, is a consultant anesthetist at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust in the United Kingdom and clinical director of medical devices at the national Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. He holds degrees in neuroscience and medicine from University College London and is a fellow of the Royal College of Anesthetists.

Dr McPherson has wide experience on medical devices from direct clinical care to international regulatory vigilance cooperation. He focuses on the human-device interaction and how the regulatory system can contribute to improved medical device safety by clinical and ergonomic assessment and vigilance to encourage improved device design.

Dr McPherson contributed to the WHO patient safety curriculum for medical schools and worked on implementing the safer surgery checklist in England, later becoming head of anesthesia patient safety and clinical governance at Portsmouth Hospitals and a member of the UK Safe Anesthesia Liaison Group. He led the team implementing the EU medical device regulation and the UK equivalent. He also led the regulatory approach to safe development and deployment of novel emergency medical devices in the UK for COVID-19 response, in particular the Ventilator Challenge, and then joined the WHO Respiratory Care Expert Panel on similar global issues.
