Biography

Rina Swart, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition at the University of the Western Cape and also serves as the Nutrition programme leader within the DSTI/NRF Centre of Excellence in Food Security since 2014.  She is a registered dietitian / nutritionist with a PhD in Public Health. Her area of specialization is in Public Health Nutrition with a focus on the prevention of all forms of malnutrition through nutrition policies and programmes as well as the evaluation of such policies and programmes. 

She has led an evaluation of the mandatory food fortification programme, an impact evaluation of the Health Promotion Levy, a randomized control trial on front of pack labels and the first National Dietary Intake Survey in adult South Africans after being part of the consortium of directors of two National Food consumption surveys of children 1-9 years. She is currently leading an assessment of the packaged food supply in eight countries in the Eastern and Southern Africa region.
