Erin Maughan
Biography
Dr. Erin D. Maughan serves as Director of Research for the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) where she promotes evidence-based school nursing practice. In this position, Dr Maughan co-leads the development of a national uniform data set for school nurses and the identification of school nurse indicators. She co-led the creation of NASN’s Framework for 21st Century School Nursing PracticeTM. Dr Maughan is also an adjunct associate professor at Georgetown University, where she teaches public health nursing. With colleagues from Georgetown, she co-directs a Global School Nurse Researcher Consortium. Dr Maughan recently completed work as a member of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) School Health Services Guideline Development Group; and has provided consultation related to school health to the WHO’s office in Sierra Leone. Dr. Maughan is certified as an advanced public health nurse; and is a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Executive Nurse Fellow alumni (2013 cohort). Dr Maughan is also a Fellow in the National Academy of School Nurses and American Academy of Nursing.
Dr Maughan has worked in school nursing and school health most of her career. Prior to NASN, Dr. Maughan was faculty in the College of Nursing at Brigham Young University, where she taught and coordinated public health/community nursing and the global health nursing/study abroad courses. She also studied issues related to school nurse staffing globally, publishing and presenting numerous times on the subject. Prior to BYU, Dr. Maughan worked for the Utah Department of Health as the state and adolescent school nurse consultant. She also worked as a school nurse. Dr. Maughan is passionate about addressing the needs of vulnerable populations and improving school-age children’s health around the world through research and data.
