Professor Esam Azhar

Biography

Professor Esam I. Azhar is a distinguished expert in virology and infectious diseases, recognized for his pioneering research on infectious agents and their impact on global public health. With more than 25 years of experience, Professor Azhar has made significant contributions to advancing diagnostic techniques, understanding antimicrobial resistance, and implementing preventive measures to combat infectious diseases worldwide. 

As a professor of medical virology and infectious agents at a leading academic and medical research institution, Professor Azhar leads several high-profile research initiatives. His work focuses on pathogen detection, epidemiology, and innovative approaches to managing viral, bacterial, fungal, and parasitic infections. He has conducted extensive research on emerging diseases, including MERS-CoV, COVID-19, and other zoonotic infections, providing critical insights that have informed global responses to these pathogens. 

Professor Azhar earned a doctorate in medical virology and infectious diseases and has completed MRCPath Part 1 training in molecular biology and virology at Public Health England Laboratories. Over his career, he has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed articles in leading scientific journals, with many cited by public health authorities and incorporated into global health guidelines. 

A frequent keynote speaker at international conferences, Professor Azhar is widely respected for his expertise in infectious disease research, including antimicrobial resistance, molecular diagnostics, viral outbreak investigations, and public health strategies. Professor Azhar is also a dedicated educator and mentor, having supervised more than 50 graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.
