Felix Liauw

Biography

Country: Indonesia

In 2019, Felix was blessed with a son after 7 years of marriage. At birth, he had respiratory problems and later suffered from vomiting and diarrhoea. The baby was prescribed Meropenem (originator brand) and Teicoplanin at a referral hospital, since he was diagnosed with a drug resistant infection. Both antibiotics were hard to procure even though Felix was a practising pediatrician. The price of the originator brand of Meropenem was also 35 times that of a generic version at that time. Felix had to run from pillar to post to get these critical medicines on time. Later, the baby was diagnosed to have congenital short bowel syndrome, a genetic condition which leads to repeated infections and abdominal symptoms. Felix lost his baby a few days later due to an infection of the blood stream
