Biography

George Haringhuizen is a consultant in medical and public health law to governments, international organizations, and academic research projects. George was national taskforce leader for the revision of the Dutch infrastructure for infectious disease control (2001–2006) and was responsible for the legal implementation of the International Health Regulations in The Netherlands and the Caribbean Overseas Territories. He was co-scribe of the Dutch Public Health Act (2008). From 2006 until mid-2023, George was front officer and chief legal advisor to the director of the Dutch National Center for Infectious Disease Control at RIVM, with which he remains affiliated. He has represented the Netherlands as a technical and legal expert in many European and global fora. In 2022, he joined the WHO IHR Roster of Experts and was a member of the Review Committee regarding amendments to the International Health Regulations.

George has participated in many international research projects and published extensively on topics including law and infectious disease control, European comparative public health law, global biobanking and data/sample sharing, and the legal implications of machine learning and AI.

He holds a degree in Law (LL.M) and in Social Sciences (MA).
